Hmm, thats a hard one - you will need a trustworthy seo agent to analyse your site - Instead of getting feedback from one seo company I would suggest you get reports of your site from at the least 3 or 4 different companies - Nearly all of the seo companies will provide you with a free report. If they all come back with the same results then you know for sure that they were using black hat techniques.

If you get a report from one seo company only then they could be telling you fibbs just so that you leave your current company and go with them.

One thing that I will mention is that black hat techniques will get you to page 1 fast but you will also loose your rankings just as fast also. As mentioned above you could get the sandbox penalty and get deindexed if this was to happen.

Just remember as long as you didnt provide your ftp access then you should be fine as if there was a method used then they would have to directly implement it on your site - For those that dont agree with this then all I can say is that if a technique existed to get your site penalised without actually having access to the sites core files then im sure many companies would be paying thousands to get their competitors sites penalised - Google understands this.

Anyway best of luck.
References :
Hi Ari:

I would suggest having someone take a look at your current SEO campaign, and explain to you the reasons for why or why not your SEO company is using blackhat techniques. The trick is though, to find someone to do this that is not trying to sell your SEO as a result.

I kind of look at this as taking your car to the local mechanic. If you're not a car expert, that mechanic can tell you anything he wants about what may or may not be wrong with your car. You need a trusted 3rd party source to verify such conclusions.

If you'd like, submit your site for review on sem-tv.com. It's a new site I put together and I'd really like to do an episode on identifying blackhat SEO techniques. Don't worry I won't try to upsell you on anything! :)

Hope this help. Cheers,

If they were using black hat, and you used them for any decent amount of time - you would have been sandboxed by google. in other words, you would no longer be indexed. that's not a guarantee it was them, but it's a pretty decent indicator.

Otherwise, just ask them what their SEO methods were. Plain and simple, don't imply they were doing something wrong, just ask for their method. Tell them you don't want details, just an overall understanding.
