Page Rank 101

August 31st, 2010 | by admin |

What is Page Rank?It is Google’s way of measuring how authoritative a site is on the net. It is relative to other sites and the higher the page rank the better as you will appear higher in the search engine list. This will make you more likely to be clicked on as people usually click what’s on the first page. Why is it important to comment on a page with high Page Ranking (PR)?

The higher Page Rank (PR) a site has, the more authority it has on Google. If you comment on a Do Follow Blog with a high PR, you can gain some of that authority into the site URL you put in the comment, which means more chances that you will gain a higher PR yourself. So why don’t you just comment on those with high PR then? Google will find something fishy if all your backlinks are on high PR sites, which is why it is best to balance it out. It is not likely that you will gain natural backlinks from only thosewith high PR and not low PR, so Google will be suspicious. Ideally, you should comment in a variety of different sites to make it look natural. Every site with a PR counts even if just a little bit.

How many PR’s are there?

n/a, 0-10. When you start out you will naturally have a n/a page rank, which means that you are not yet properly indexed by Google. You will be indexed in time after Google Bots crawl your site, but who can wait? You can actually help Google speed things up a bit by adding your URL manually through this site:

GOOGLE INDEX: http://www. google. com/addurl/ Of course, Google is not the only search engine out there, so you can also index yourself in others to also gain page rank.

BING INDEX: http://help. live. com/Help. aspx?market=en-US&project=WL_Webmasters&querytype=topic&query=WL_WEBMASTERS_CONC_GettingSiteIndexed. htm I think you have to pay Yahoo! to have your site indexed, which is why I personally don’t recommend it, but do point it out if I’m wrong. This is a learning process for both of us. When does Google Update? It seems Google updates every 2-5 months and doesn’t seem to give anyone a heads up. Maybe it depends of a number of reasons such as the quantity to update. The last update in 2009 was Dec. 31, 2009 year end update. Does commenting on a low page rank count against me?Of course not! I have heard of rumors saying that a PR 0 site can lower page rank but I have never heard of anything so idiotic. In most cases, or in the way Goggle prefers, page rank is determined by the number of natural backlinks you have. So if this is true then if you get a natural backlink froma site with low page ranking who likes your site, you get a minus point? I don’t think so.

What’s a good Page Rank to start commenting on?

PR 2 and up will be good. Remember to balance it out. In most cases your comments will easily be approved in those with lower PR’s anyways. Those with higher PR will be more selective of what messages gets approved. The highest page rank I have come across that is Do Follow is a PR 8, and they are strict on keywords so I don’t recommend posting with those. Of course PR changes, so you can comment on a low PR blog and if in the future if it gets a higher PR, your comment will rank up in authority as well. Does the whole site have the same Page Rank? No, in most cases the main page will have the highest PR as there will be a lot linking to that. Although there are times when a single page has a higher PR than the main page when there are a lot linking to it. Whenever there is a new page and the site is properly indexed, it will automatically be given a PR of 0, but there is actually an invisible page rank behind that depends on the main page’s PR. So don’t think that commenting on a page with 0 PR means it is useless.

How can I check Page Rank?

I see to it that the Do Follow List I gather contains sites that are PR 2 and up so it has moderate authority, but I cannot assure you that they will not change ranking over time. A useful tool to check PR would be Page Rank Checker. http://www. prchecker. info/ Just input the URL, type the verification code, and you are good to go. How is Page Rank determined? There are a lot of things from the Google algorithm that goes into consideration. The number of inbound links, traffic, how relevant two sites are, how important Google thinks it is. (Yeah I know, Adobe has relatively low traffic but has a page rank of 10, and there are only 2 handfuls of those). That is why it is important to build backlinks. Generally, the higher the page rank of a site, the higher authority passed on to you. Although it also depends on how many outbound links are coming from the site, the more links from a page, the lesser authority juice it gives out. Does it matter to have a lot of backlinks from a page?Yes, it matters. The more links from a site, the more % of the authority juice you get. There is a rule though where the more links going out from a site, the less authority juice it gives out to the links.
