Keyword Research – How to Do It

August 15th, 2010 | by admin |

Let’s start by saying, “There are many ways to do Keyword Research. ” However, the basic cornerstone of how to do it, is very close to being the same. The only slight difference might be the method used to investigate specific details in the Keyword Research.

To begin your searches, first make a list of the products or services that you want to optimize for. Then, create a list of synonyms and associated words for that particular keyword or keyword phrase.

To come up with a list of synonyms and related words, there are many tools available for your use. Sometimes, all of these tools can become a bit bewildering just trying to obtain a few synonyms or related words.

After you’ve completed your new keyword list, how many times are these keywords searched for?

What are the deviations of that keyword, that people are actually searching for?

There are several tools available to help you in knowing these statistics. Here are a few:

· Google AdWords Keywords Tool: – This tool will not only allow you to see the keywords that are greatly searched, but also, keywords that other companies are paying a lot of money for.

· Wordtracker Tool: – This tool is not free, but it is not that expensive, either. They do have a free trial that you can subscribe to for one day.

· Trillian Keyword Discovery Tool: – This tool has the advantage of having up to a year’s worth of past data.

Okay, you’ve gathered several great keywords, using the tools above. Now, let’s find out how much competition you have for each keyword. If you do a search on Google, MSN and Yahoo, your result will give you the total number of searches for that keyword. This may be that number of websites that you’ll have to outrank. However, maybe not all of them are targeting the same keywords that you are using.

So, how many of the results listed, are really from competition that is optimizing their website. . . and how many are showing up, because their website has the same keywords that you were targeting?

Now, part of Search Engine Optimization is having your keywords in the URL, like a domain name, subdomains or a folder.

Why not check these out, by using a few search commands like. . . Intitle, Inurl and Inanchor. As an example:

Intitle: “auto auctions”

If you’ll notice, I’ve placed the keywords in quotes, since most keyword researchers will search this way.

Inanchor: “auto auctions”

This will give you the results of your keywords in anchor text.

Inurl: “auto auctions”

This shows the amount of your keywords included in the URL of a website.

For optimizing your keyword, you will look for a high search volume and low competition.

What are long tail keywords? Here is the general belief:

· It is harder to rank very high in search engines, because you have a lot more competition, using less keywords.

· For less competition, enabling a higher search engine rating, use more keywords. More keywords equals a more specific search term, which would more than likely, have less competition.

Try adopting the above methods and I’m sure your SEO will improve significantly. Try different methods and adopt the one that works best for you. Keyword Research is a vital part of obtaining a front page on Google.
