What web design skills do I need to do this?

March 9th, 2010 | by admin |

I’m going to sell and make small-medium informational websites to local businesses in my community. No ecommerce or anything extravagant, but just a starting point for my portfolio.

I am proficient in XHTML, css, and Photoshop, but I really don’t know Flash, JavaScript, or any CGI scripting.

Should I craft these skills before I start the business or just kind learn as I go along?
I answered my own question I guess. Now I just need to make contracts, etc.

You allready know the basics, the others are helpful but I would say yes you can learn them as you go along.

I would reccomend you trying to learn PHP and ASP too though, they probably more important in web design than Flash and JavaScript.

looks like you can learn as you go…..those skills really come into play when you want the site to do things….

as long as you arent doing ecommerce or any really flashy things then you can learn as toyou go…

PHP is a great place to start, but "learn as you go" is perfect. I learned more with each project I did – it was an opportunity to apply previous knowledge and combine it with new research on specific issues. Worked awesome for me.
Personally I believe Adobe’s Flex solution is a large part of the future (especially with AIR). Java too, nowadays, with Google’s GWT that can compile Java code into AJAX, and Google’s Android that compliles Java code into upcoming embedded linux smartphones/handsets. CGI is becoming old school (I think) with PHP being able to do pretty much anything.
